Diethyl phthalate is used as a plasticizer for adhesives to enhance the adhesion of polyvinyl acetate. It also serves as a plasticizer for plastics and cellulose resins, offering superior low-temperature flexibility and durability compared with dimethyl phthalate. It is often blended with dimethyl phthalate to improve product performance in terms of water resistance, elasticity, light stability, and hardness. Additionally, it is employed as a plasticizer for alkyd resins, nitrile rubber, and chloroprene rubber. Its main drawback is its high volatility, which can pose operational challenges. Diethyl phthalate can also be used as a thickening agent for polyvinyl acetate emulsions, a plasticizer for food-packaging film adhesives, an alcohol modifier, a fragrance-retention agent, an ingredient in aerosol insecticides, a fragrance solvent, and a stabilizer for rocket propellants, among other applications. In pharmaceutical manufacturing, it is utilized as a solvent and lubricant.
