Diethyl phthalate is a clear, oily liquid with a boiling point of 298°C. It is insoluble in water but soluble in ethanol and other organic solvents. Diethyl phthalate is used as a plasticizer, solvent, lubricant, fixative, foaming agent, gas chromatography stationary phase, alcohol denaturant, and spray insecticide. This product is compatible with cellulose acetate, cellulose acetate butyrate, poly(vinyl chloride), nitrocellulose, ethyl cellulose, polymethyl methacrylate, polystyrene, polyvinyl butyral, and vinyl chloride–vinyl acetate copolymer, among others; it exhibits good compatibility with most resins. It is primarily employed as a plasticizer for cellulose-based resins.
