Immediately evacuate personnel from the contaminated spill area to a safe zone and establish a perimeter, strictly restricting access. Eliminate all sources of ignition. Emergency responders are advised to wear self-contained positive-pressure respirators and protective suits. As far as practicable, shut off the source of the leak to prevent it from entering confined spaces such as sewers and drainage ditches.
For small spills: absorb with dry sand or a similar material; alternatively, scrub with an emulsion made from a non-combustible dispersant, and after diluting the wash solution, discharge it into the wastewater system.
Large-scale leakage: Construct containment dikes or excavate pits to contain the spill. Use pumps to transfer the material into tank trucks or dedicated collection containers for recovery, or transport it to a waste disposal facility for proper treatment.
