Methanol, also known as hydroxymethane, is an organic compound and the simplest saturated monohydric alcohol. Its chemical formula is CH ₃ OH/CH₃OH, where CH₃OH is the structural formula that highlights the hydroxyl group of methanol; its CAS number is 67-56-1, its molecular weight is 32.04, and its boiling point is 64.7°C. Because it was first discovered during the dry distillation of wood, it is also known as “wood alcohol” or “wood spirit.” The minimum lethal dose for human oral poisoning is approximately 100 mg/kg body weight, and ingestion of 0.3 to 1 g/kg can be fatal. It is used in the production of formaldehyde and pesticides, as an extractant for organic compounds, and as a denaturant for ethanol, among other applications. The commercial product is typically prepared by the reaction of carbon monoxide with hydrogen.
