- Appearance: A colorless, transparent oily liquid with a faint, characteristic odor or virtually odorless; insoluble in water but miscible with most organic solvents, including ethanol, diethyl ether, acetone, and ethyl acetate.
-Physical properties: melting point –20 °C, boiling point 245–246 °C (at atmospheric pressure), relative density 1.007–1.010 (at 20 °C), refractive index (nD20) 1.4270–1.4290, flash point (open cup) approximately 110–117 °C.
- Chemical properties: Stable under normal temperature and pressure; incompatible with strong oxidizers, strong acids, and strong bases. It exhibits the general reactivity of esters and, in the presence of acid or base catalysts, undergoes hydrolysis to yield adipic acid and ethanol. It can also undergo alcoholysis and ammonolysis reactions.
Uses
