Detailed Introduction
Tributyl citrate (TBC), with CAS No. 77-94-1, has the molecular formula C₁₈H₃₂O₇ and a molecular weight of 360.44. It is an environmentally friendly plasticizer.
- Appearance: A colorless, transparent oily liquid with a faint fruity aroma and virtually no odor.
-Physical properties: density 1.038–1.042 g/cm³ (at 20°C); boiling point 389.8°C at 760 mmHg and 170°C at 133.3 Pa; flash point 185°C (open cup) / 120.7°C (closed cup); refractive index 1.444–1.448 (at 20°C); practically insoluble in water (solubility at 20°C is approximately 0.05 g per 100 mL of water); readily soluble in ethanol, diethyl ether, acetone, benzene, and most other organic solvents.
- Chemical properties: Exhibits the typical chemical behavior of esters and undergoes hydrolysis under strong acidic or alkaline conditions. It is chemically stable, has low volatility, demonstrates excellent compatibility with resins, offers high plasticizing efficiency, and possesses good cold resistance, light stability, water resistance, and mold resistance. Additionally, it exhibits good thermal stability and is resistant to discoloration upon heating.
Uses
1. Plastics Industry: Used as a plasticizer for polyvinyl chloride, vinyl chloride copolymers, cellulose resins, and other materials in food packaging, soft children’s toys, medical devices, and similar applications, imparting excellent flexibility, transparency, and low-temperature resistance while eliminating the risk of harmful substance migration.
2. Coatings and inks: Used as a plasticizer and film-forming aid in waterborne coatings and inks to enhance film-forming performance, flexibility, and adhesion, while reducing cracking of the coating under low-temperature conditions. Suitable for coatings used in food packaging and environmentally friendly architectural coatings, among others.
3. Adhesive Industry: Used as a plasticizer in food-contact-grade hot-melt adhesives and pressure-sensitive adhesives to enhance flexibility, adhesion, and low-temperature bonding performance, making it suitable for bonding applications in food packaging and medical devices.
4. Cosmetics Industry: Used as a plasticizer in cosmetics such as nail polish and mascara to enhance product flexibility and stability; it can also serve as a fragrance fixative to prolong the longevity of perfume scents.
5. Other applications: It can also be used as a gas chromatographic stationary phase, a plastic toughening agent, a defoaming agent, and a solvent for nitrocellulose, among other uses.
Packaging: 25 L plastic drums, 200 L steel or plastic drums, IBC tote tanks, and flexible intermediate bulk containers (FIBCs).
