Detailed Introduction
Dimethyl adipate (DMA), with CAS No. 627-93-0, a molecular formula of C₈H₁₄O₄ and a molecular weight of 174.20, is an important intermediate in organic synthesis.
- Appearance: Colorless, transparent oily liquid with a slight characteristic odor; liquid at room temperature and atmospheric pressure.
-Physical properties: boiling point 228–229°C (101.3 kPa), melting point 8°C (typically a liquid at room temperature but solidifies at low temperatures), density (20°C) 1.063 g/mL, refractive index (n20/D) 1.428–1.430, flash point 107°C (closed cup), slightly soluble in water (approximately 0.1 g/100 mL), readily soluble in alcohols, ethers, ketones, esters, and other organic solvents, and miscible with most hydrocarbon solvents.
– Chemical properties: Stable under normal temperature and pressure; incompatible with strong oxidizers, strong acids, and strong bases. In the presence of a catalyst, it can undergo ester exchange with alcohols to form other dialkyl adipates (such as dioctyl adipate, DOA). Upon aqueous hydrolysis catalyzed by acids or bases, it yields adipic acid and methanol. It exhibits mild irritation to skin and eyes, is non-carcinogenic, and is classified as an environmentally friendly plasticizer raw material.
Uses
1. Synthetic intermediates: The primary application is the production of dioctyl adipate (DOA) and diisooctyl adipate (DIOA). These two compounds are commonly used as low-temperature-resistant plasticizers in polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and synthetic rubbers.
2. Gas chromatographic stationary phase: Due to its excellent selective retention for oxygen-containing compounds (such as alcohols, ketones, and esters) and unsaturated hydrocarbons, it can be used as the stationary phase in gas chromatography.
3. Organic synthesis raw materials: used in the synthesis of fine chemicals such as pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, and fragrances.
4. Solvent: May be used as a solvent or carrier for certain pharmaceuticals and insecticides.
5. Lithium-ion battery electrolyte additives: In recent years, these additives have also been investigated for use in lithium-ion battery electrolytes as film-forming agents to enhance cycle performance and safety.
6. Other: Dimethyl adipate is a low-toxicity, environmentally friendly chemical feedstock that serves primarily as a precursor for the production of cold-resistant plasticizers and plays an important role in the fields of plastics processing and organic synthesis.
Packaging: 25 L plastic drums, 200 L steel or plastic drums, IBC tote tanks, and flexible intermediate bulk containers (FIBCs).
