Detailed Introduction
Organotin stabilizers are a class of high-performance, highly transparent PVC heat stabilizers. Similar to calcium–zinc stabilizers, they typically comprise a formulated system that includes primary stabilizers, secondary stabilizers, lubricants, and other additives; however, their core active ingredient is an organotin compound.
- Appearance and physical properties: Typically a pale yellow or amber-colored, transparent oily liquid. Thiols have an extremely pungent, foul odor (reminiscent of rotting vegetables or rotten eggs), which is their most significant drawback. Carboxylic acids, by contrast, have a relatively milder odor, sometimes with a slight ester-like scent. They are readily soluble in plasticizers such as DOP and DOTP as well as in organic solvents and exhibit excellent compatibility with PVC resin.
- Physical parameters (using common liquid methyl tin mercaptide as an example): density 1.17–1.19 g/cm³ at 25°C, viscosity 50–200 mPa·s at 25°C (excellent flowability), refractive index 1.510–1.515, decomposition temperature > 200°C (outstanding thermal stability).
- Chemical properties
Thermal stability: Excellent. At PVC processing temperatures (160°C–200°C), it effectively captures HCl and displaces unstable chlorine atoms from the PVC polymer chain.
Transparency: Excellent. Organotin stabilizers do not cause turbidity like lead salts or certain calcium–zinc stabilizers, thereby enabling PVC products to maintain exceptionally high transparency.
Weather resistance: Excellent; effectively inhibits discoloration of PVC under light exposure.
Reactivity:
Organotin thiols undergo crosslinking reactions with PVC at elevated temperatures, imparting a certain hardening effect to the finished products.
Upon contact with water, trace hydrolysis may occur, generating hydrogen sulfide gas (which exacerbates the odor).
Uses
Organotin stabilizers are primarily used in PVC products that demand exceptionally high transparency, heat resistance, and mechanical properties:
1. High-transparency products (core application):
Mineral water bottle labels: This is one of the largest application areas, requiring films with high transparency and excellent printability.
2. Transparent sheets/boards: such as blister packaging, decorative panels, and rigid or flexible sheets.
3. Medical infusion sets/blood bags: Although some have now been replaced by calcium–zinc systems, high-end medical catheters are still in use (subject to biocompatibility requirements).
4. Rigid PVC Products:
Water supply piping materials—particularly large-diameter pipes—are utilized for their enhanced rigidity and heat resistance.
PVC-U doors and windows: enhanced weld strength and weather resistance of the profiles.
5. Food packaging materials:
Organotin compounds that meet FDA standards, such as octyltin, may be used in food-grade plastic wraps and containers.
