Maleic anhydride, also known as maleic acid anhydride (MAH) or simply “maleic anhydride,” is the anhydride of maleic acid. At room temperature, it appears as a colorless or white solid with a pungent acidic odor, and its molecular formula is C ₄ H ₂ O ₃ In the early days, maleic anhydride was prepared by the catalytic oxidation of benzene; however, to reduce production costs, the process was subsequently switched to the oxidation of n-butane: 2CH₃CH₂CH₂CH₃ + 7O₂ → 2C₂H₂(CO)₂O + 8H₂O.
