Detailed Introduction
Dibutyl phthalate (DBP), with CAS No. 84-74-2, a molecular formula of C₁₆H₂₂O₄, and a molecular weight of 278.34, is a common phthalate ester compound primarily used as a plasticizer.
- Appearance: A colorless, transparent oily liquid with a slight aromatic odor; insoluble in water but readily soluble in organic solvents such as ethanol, diethyl ether, acetone, and benzene.
-Physical properties: melting point −35°C, boiling point 340°C (at atmospheric pressure), flash point 171°C (open cup), density 1.045 g/cm³ (25°C), refractive index n₂₀/D 1.492 (literature value), viscosity 16.3 mPa·s (25°C).
- Chemical properties: Stable under normal temperature and pressure; upon heating in the presence of acids or bases, it undergoes hydrolysis to yield phthalic acid and butanol; flammable, with the generation of irritating fumes during combustion; may undergo chemical reactions upon contact with strong oxidizing agents.
Uses
1. Plasticizer: This is the primary application of DBP. It exhibits excellent compatibility with polyvinyl chloride (PVC), cellulose resins, natural rubber, and synthetic rubbers. It is mainly used in soft PVC products, such as artificial leather, films, wire and cable sheaths, and footwear materials.
2. Solvent: Used as a solvent for many natural and synthetic resins, and also in paints, varnishes, and adhesives.
3. Cosmetics: It was once widely used as a fixative and plasticizer in nail polish, perfumes, and hair sprays (Note: Due to health risks, many countries have now restricted or banned its use in cosmetics).
4. Other applications: used as an intermediate in the production of dyes and insecticides, and as a fixative in fragrances.
Packaging: 200 L iron drums or plastic drums, IBC tote tanks, and flexible intermediate bulk containers (FIBCs).
