- Appearance and physical properties: A colorless or slightly yellow, transparent oily liquid with good fluidity and a faint characteristic odor that is difficult to detect at low concentrations. It is insoluble in water (water solubility < 0.01 wt%), but readily soluble in ethanol, diethyl ether, acetone, toluene, xylene, and most other organic solvents.
-Physical properties: melting point −55°C, boiling point 385°C (at atmospheric pressure), density 0.986 g/cm³ (25°C), refractive index n₂₀/D 1.483, flash point 218°C (open cup), viscosity ~80 mPa·s (20°C), vapor pressure (25°C) ≈1×10⁻⁷ kPa.
- Chemical properties: Stable under normal temperature and pressure; not easily oxidized or volatilized. Under acid or base catalysis, it undergoes hydrolysis upon heating to yield phthalic acid and 2-ethylhexanol. It is combustible and will ignite in the presence of open flames or high temperatures, producing irritating fumes upon combustion. It reacts upon contact with strong oxidizing agents such as potassium permanganate and nitric acid, so mixed storage should be avoided. It exhibits excellent compatibility with polymers such as PVC, ABS, cellulose acetate, and natural and synthetic rubbers, and demonstrates high plasticizing efficiency.
Uses
1. PVC primary plasticizer (core application)
Soft PVC products: artificial leather, floor covering, agricultural film, packaging film, flexible hoses, sealing strips, footwear materials, and more.
Electrical-grade DOP: Insulation and sheathing for wires and cables, ensuring electrical insulation and weather resistance.
General grade: improves product flexibility and processability, while reducing hardness and the risk of brittleness and cracking.
2. Rubber Industry
Softening and plasticizing agents for nitrile rubber, chloroprene rubber, and other elastomers, enhancing resilience and reducing permanent compression set; used in seals, hoses, shoe soles, and similar applications.
3. Coatings and Inks
Plasticizers for nitrocellulose lacquers, alkyd paints, and polyurethane coatings, enhancing film flexibility, gloss, and adhesion.
Ink additives: adjust flowability, enhance pigment dispersion, and prevent cracking of the ink film.
4. Other Applications
