Dioctyl sebacate (DOS), with CAS No. 122-62-3, a molecular formula of C₂₆H₅₀O₄ and a molecular weight of 426.68, is an excellent cold-resistant plasticizer that outperforms dioctyl adipate (DOA) in performance; it also serves as an important base oil for synthetic lubricants.
- Appearance and physical properties: A pale yellow or colorless, transparent oily liquid with a slight odor; insoluble in water, slightly soluble in ethylene glycol, and soluble in ethanol, diethyl ether, chloroform, acetone, benzene, and other organic solvents.
-Physical properties: melting point –55°C to –40°C (very low, with excellent low-temperature flow); boiling point 377°C at atmospheric pressure; flash point 215°C to 220°C (open cup); density 0.913–0.919 g/cm³ at 20°C; refractive index n₂₀/D 1.449–1.451; viscosity 25 mPa·s at 20°C (moderate viscosity—slightly thicker than DOA but still classified as a low-viscosity plasticizer).
- Chemical properties: It exhibits chemical stability and excellent weather resistance. Owing to its long, symmetrical molecular chain, it demonstrates outstanding low-temperature performance, making it one of the best cold-resistant plasticizers available today. However, its compatibility with PVC is relatively poor, so it is typically not used alone but rather blended with primary plasticizers such as DOP and DBP to prevent surface blooming (exudation) in finished products. It also boasts good water resistance and oil resistance.
Uses
DOS is primarily used in applications that demand exceptionally high cold resistance, weather resistance, and electrical insulation:
1. Cold-resistant plasticizer (core application):
Used in polyvinyl chloride (PVC), vinyl chloride copolymers, cellulose nitrate, ethyl cellulose, and synthetic rubbers.
Typical applications: cold-resistant wires and cables (such as outdoor cables in cold regions), cold-resistant films, synthetic leather, hoses, and sealing strips.
2. Synthetic Lubricating Oil (Critical Applications):
Owing to its excellent thermal stability, high viscosity index, and outstanding low-temperature fluidity, it is commonly used as a base oil for aviation lubricants, precision instrument oils, low-temperature hydraulic fluids, and brake fluids.
3. Rubber Industry:
It is used as a plasticizer for nitrile rubber, chloroprene rubber, and styrene-butadiene rubber, significantly improving the cold resistance, resilience, and aging resistance of these rubbers.
4. Electrical Insulating Materials:
Used in the manufacture of low-temperature-resistant electrical insulation tapes, cable compounds, and other products.
5. Other:
Used as a solvent and fixative in perfumery.
Packaging: 25 L plastic drums, 200 L steel or plastic drums, IBC tote tanks, and flexible intermediate bulk containers (FIBCs).
