Chlorinated paraffin
Summary description:
Chlorinated paraffin is a chlorinated derivative of paraffinic hydrocarbons. Depending on the chlorine content, it is mainly classified into three grades: chlorinated paraffin–42 (CAS No. 63449-39-8), chlorinated paraffin–52 (CAS No. 106232-86-4), and chlorinated paraffin–70 (CAS No. 108171-27-3).

Detailed Introduction
Chlorinated paraffins are chlorinated derivatives of paraffinic hydrocarbons. Based on their chlorine content, they are primarily classified into three grades: chlorinated paraffin–42 (CAS No. 63449-39-8), chlorinated paraffin–52 (CAS No. 106232-86-4), and chlorinated paraffin–70 (CAS No. 108171-27-3). Among these, chlorinated paraffin–52 is currently the most widely produced and extensively used grade.

- Chemical properties: At room temperature, the material exhibits chemical stability, is non-flammable (due to the presence of flame retardants), and does not explode. It also demonstrates good weather resistance and chemical corrosion resistance. However, under high temperatures (typically above 120°C) or exposure to light, it decomposes and releases hydrogen chloride (HCl) gas, which can cause discoloration of the material and corrosion of metals. Metal oxides such as iron oxide and zinc oxide can accelerate this decomposition.
Uses
Chlorinated paraffins are primarily used as flame retardants and auxiliary plasticizers, with slightly different application priorities depending on the specific grade:
1. Chlorinated Paraffin-52 (most commonly used): a secondary plasticizer for PVC, employed in cable compounds, flooring materials, hoses, synthetic leather, rubber, and other applications. It helps reduce costs and enhances flame retardancy, but it can diminish the cold resistance and light stability of finished products. Flame retardant: used in rubber, paints, coatings, lubricating oils, and other formulations. Lubricant additive: serves as an extreme-pressure and anti-wear agent.
2. Chlorinated Paraffin-42: Lubricant additive: primarily used in metalworking cutting oils and gear oils as an extreme-pressure agent to enhance lubricating performance. Plasticizer: employed in PVC products, especially those with high cold-resistance requirements (such as cable compounds). Water-repellent agent for textiles: utilized in the textile and leather industries.
3. Chlorinated Paraffin-70: an efficient flame retardant primarily used in rubber, plastics (such as ABS and epoxy resins), fibers, and coatings. It is also employed for flame-retardant treatment of paper, including decorative paper and wallpaper, as well as in fire-resistant coatings for steel structures.
Packaging: 200 L iron drums or plastic drums, IBC tote tanks, and flexible intermediate bulk containers (FIBCs).
